About Sara Rahbar

Sara Rahbar holds a beagle in her lap and looks to camera. She is an woman with Iranian heritage, a medium light skin tone with an upper arm tattoo, grey hair pulled up, and wears chunky dark glasses, gold earrings, and green beaded necklace.

Born in 1976 in Tehran, Iran, Sara Rahbar lives and works in New York. She pursued an interdisciplinary study program in New York and also studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. She left her birthplace during the period of immense upheaval that followed the revolution in Iran and the start of the Iran-Iraq War. Her work explores concepts of nationalism, separation, and belonging—driven by central themes of pain, violence, and the complexity of the human condition. Her works are in the permanent collections of The British Museum, The Centre Pompidou, The Davis Museum, Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art in Australia, and the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Compelled by an instinctual obsession to piece together and dissect, I construct my work using collected objects such as military memorabilia, flags, weapons, tools, and other found objects. As the collected objects grow larger and heavier, the canvases become tougher and more densely constructed, until the objects themselves take over and take on a life of their own.”
