Accessibility

The Joan Mitchell Foundation is committed to creating and maintaining accessible spaces, both at our physical sites and within our digital platforms.

Website Accessibility

The Foundation is committed to expanding digital accessibility and maintaining an inclusive and equitable user experience on our website. To meet the needs of a wide range of web users, we employ responsive and high contrast text, keyboard navigation, alt text for images, and video captioning as standard practices. Our site is accessible on mobile devices.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, with three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. The Joan Mitchell Foundation’s website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

  • Motion sensor-based light switching for all public areas

Site Accessibility: Joan Mitchell Center, New Orleans

The Joan Mitchell Center strives to be an inclusive and welcoming gathering place for artists and guests. With that in mind, we are continually working on improving accessibility on our residency campus.

Key site accessibility features include:

  • ADA-accessible entry and exit points for all campus buildings
  • Wheelchair accessible bathrooms
  • Auto-openers for the studio building front door, back door, and Studio 8
  • Lift for the Admin Building side porch
  • Adjustable height work tables in studios
  • Certain studio building doors are left open in order to make them accessible (media room, bathrooms, tool room)
  • ADA compliant signage on restrooms and public gathering rooms
  • ADA designated parking space available in gated parking lot accessible via 1464 N Rocheblave Street. Parking lot requires numeric code to enter; see Accommodation Requests contact information below to request access in advance.
  • Set policies for COVID-19 and other infectious disease mitigation. Masking is optional. Masks and hand sanitizer are available at public events.

Known accessibility challenges on campus follow:

  • Bayou Road gates: Both gates into campus are difficult for unaided wheelchair access, as a support person will be needed to hold open the gate to pass through. An attendant is available to assist with gate access during public events.
  • Campus pathways and the back parking lot are composed of a semi-loose medium-to-large gravel on top of packed sand that is difficult to navigate in wheelchairs, as gravel can shift and is not an ideal stable surface. It is inaccessible to some wheelchair users without support. Power chair users are better able to navigate this surface, but may still find it suboptimal. Rubber mats currently cover the pathways between the Studio Building front and back doors, which make the pathways more accessible to lighter power wheelchair users, however they are not as compatible with heavy power chair users or manual chair users. A support person can be provided to assist wheelchair users; see Accommodation Requests contact information below to request support in advance.
  • Ramps: There are small gaps at the bottom of the cement building ramps that make it difficult for some wheelchair users to get onto the ramp on their own. See Accommodation Requests contact information below to request support in advance. Auto-opening doors for the studio building require a code for entry. An attendant is available to assist with door access during public events.
