Welcoming Mara Hoberman in a New Role

We are pleased to welcome Mara Hoberman as Project Manager of the Joan Mitchell Catalogue Raisonné. Hoberman brings more than ten years of direct experience to her new role, having served the project since 2015, most recently as Senior Researcher based in Paris. In this capacity, she conducted extensive archival research and examinations of paintings in European collections. As a result, Hoberman holds a deep understanding of Mitchell’s rich history in France and the critical reception of her work in Paris.

An accomplished writer and critic, Hoberman has contributed texts to numerous museum publications including the retrospective catalogue Joan Mitchell (2021), as well as newspapers and journals in English and French such as Artforum, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Le Quotidien de L’Art. She is the editor of the recently released Transatlantique: Joan Mitchell (ER Publishing, 2026), a collection of essays in French and English by contemporary artists reflecting on the work and life of Joan Mitchell. Prior to joining the Joan Mitchell team, she held the role of the Project Manager for the Jasper Johns Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings.

“Mara’s significant experience looking closely at Mitchell’s paintings and researching her history in France add immeasurably to the Catalogue Raisonné team,” noted Sarah Roberts, Senior Director of Curatorial Affairs for the Joan Mitchell Foundation. “As a result of her long tenure with the project, she brings important cumulative knowledge that will be invaluable to shaping its future. We are excited to welcome her to this expanded role and our New York-based team.”

Established by the Joan Mitchell Foundation in 2015, the Joan Mitchell Catalogue Raisonné is an ongoing research project that will result in a scholarly publication containing authoritative information about Mitchell’s paintings on canvas.
