About Gerald Clarke

Gerald Clark looks ahead in front of a blue sky. He is a citizen of the Cahuilla Band of Indians, and has a medium skin tone, salt-and-pepper goatee and hair pulled back. He wears chunky black glasses and a grey t-shirt.

Gerald Clarke is an enrolled citizen of the Cahuilla Band of Indians and lives in the home his grandfather built on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. Having earned degrees in Studio Arts, he has exhibited his work widely and currently serves as a Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California Riverside, where he teaches classes in Native American art, history, and culture.

Within the Cahuilla community, as in the world at large, I’ve seen how certain people are naturally drawn toward fulfilling the roles of healer, leader, teacher, and activist, among others. I feel an artist plays a vital role within healthy communities as well. To create anything, including art, is to mirror the sacred act of the original creation.”
