About Chie Fueki

Chie Fueki (b. 1973) lives in Beacon, New York. Fueki was born in Yokohama, Japan, and grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She earned an MFA from Yale University and a BFA from Ringling College of Art and Design, FL. Fueki's selected solo exhibitions include Shoshana Wayne Gallery, LA; Mary Boone Gallery, NY; Bill Maynes Gallery, NY; Orlando Museum, FL; and Mother Gallery, Beacon, NY. Selected group exhibitions include Inman Gallery, Houston, TX; Miles McEnery Gallery, NY; and D.C. Moore Gallery, NY. Fueki received the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2008 and The Purchase Award in 2008 and 2021. Fueki has made public artworks at PS 92Q, Queens, NY, and at the HHS Lerner Children's Pavilion, NY. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, the Orlando Museum of Art, Florida, and the Pizzuti Collection at the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio. She is represented by Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Los Angeles, and DC Moore Gallery, New York.

My painting practice focuses on the representation of abstract figures, symbols and spaces through multi-layered ornamental surfaces and color fields. I mix visual languages and culturally codified images drawn from my experience growing up in a traditionally oriented Japanese community in Sao Paulo, Brazil.”
