About Asante Salaam

Asante Salaam is a multimedia artist, passionate about creating a world where art and culture are treasured as vital components of society. Born and raised in New Orleans, Asante crafts visual records of transformation, shapes experiential installations, captures treasured moments in the midst of everyday activities, and renders portraits from her imagination. She melds handwriting and images into artist books that heal, inspire, and transform. As an artist-in-residence at A Studio in the Woods, she developed a healing installation and ritual responding to the impact of Katrina and the erosion of the Delta. Her Deeply Rooted series documents the emotional displacement of post-Katrina life. Her Perseverance watercolor series was published in collaboration with written text. Asante holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her artwork lives in numerous private collections and has been displayed in group and solo exhibitions in San Diego and New Orleans.

As an artist, I believe life is art and art is life. From childhood, I used art as a lens to understand the world around me. As I have grown as an artist, I remain invested in a vision of artmaking that is multidisciplinary and community centered.”
