About Naomi Reis

Born in Shiga, Japan, Naomi Kawanishi Reis investigates built space both as a studio artist and as an artist-organizer. In the studio, Reis explores the utopian architecture of modernism, paradise gardens, and geodesics through mixed-media paintings and installations. She has had solo exhibitions at Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo, and Mixed Greens, New York, among other venues. She has additionally shown at Brooklyn Academy of Music and Wave Hill, and was a 2015 NYFA Finalist in Painting. To address the lack of institutional space dedicated to artists of Asian descent in New York, in 2015 Reis co-founded the collective AN/OTHER NY, a nomadic workspace for emerging Asian art practitioners to learn with a group of peers through reading groups, workshops, and public events.

As an image maker, I have followed an instinct to crawl inside the photographic image and reconstruct it using everyday materials of paper, fabric, blades, and brushes. This manual labor pulls open a space between the 3-D built environment and its flattened representation. Taking the form of wall-sized murals, drawings, and framed paintings, these works focus on idealized landscapes of the impossible in-between.”
