A Report from the Joan Mitchell Fellows Convening, Summer 2022

This summer, we gathered the inaugural Joan Mitchell Fellows for a three-day convening at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. Guided by consultants Sheetal Prajapati (Lohar Projects), Brunch and Budget, Tempestt Hazel (Sixty Inches from Center), and Elaine Grogan Luttrull (Minerva Fine Arts), the Fellows engaged in dialogue around the professional needs and challenges that artists encounter in tandem with the advancement of their practices and careers. We spoke with the attending artists about what they were learning and thinking about at the convening and created the below video with excerpts from those conversations.

The Joan Mitchell Fellowship is an expansion of our previous grant programs into a fellowship structure that combines a $60,000 financial award, distributed over five years, with dedicated and flexible professional development. As we continue to work with the Fellows over the five-year arc of the program, we look forward to more opportunities for convening, learning, and mutual inspiration.
