Joan Mitchell Center

To complement its grant programs and deepen its relationships with artists, in 2015 the Foundation opened the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans to host artist residencies, providing working and living spaces on the Center’s two-acre campus.

Residencies at the Joan Mitchell Center provide the crucial elements of time and space for artistic experimentation—while offering artists opportunities to engage with arts professionals, partner arts organizations, and others in the community.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we redesigned the residency program for Fall 2020 and 2021 to focus on studio space and virtual programming for New Orleans-based artists. For 2022, the Center will resume its residency model of hosting both national and local artists. We are now accepting applications from New Orleans artists for 2022 residencies, with a deadline of August 16.

Events & Public Engagement

While the Center is generally closed to the public so that the artists can focus on their work, community members are invited to visit during our events, including Community Coffee meet-and-greets and seasonal Evening Open Studios.

Due to COVID-19, our public events are currently paused. Follow the Center on Instagram for updates on ways to engage with artists virtually during their residencies.

Reach Out & Connect

While the Center is not open for tours or drop-in visits outside of our public events, our staff is available to answer questions about the residency program via phone or email.
