About Erica Westenberger

Erica Westenberger is a visual artist living and working in New Orleans, LA. Her work explores emotive decryptions of empowerment or insecurity through allegorical storytelling. She received her BFA with an emphasis in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014. Her work has been exhibited in the group shows Paper Menagerie at 5 Press Gallery in New Orleans; Perestroika at 728 Piety in New Orleans; I Changed My Mind at Rational Park in Chicago, IL; and Silent Spring at The Rose Room in Venice, CA.

My entryway into each new piece is through focusing on the lines and negative space the figure(s) create. This intuitive process allows me to ask questions about the main narrative bit-by-bit: what gestures are the figures invoking, what’s the tone of the setting, what are the objects and atmosphere suggesting. I play with the balance between the calligraphic style of the figurative elements and the detail of the surrounding scene.”
