A long room with rough stone walls and a flat, wood-beamed ceiling is mostly filled with platforms made of steel grids. Metal beams create loose cages around six tanks, three to each side. In each tank is a sculpture of a person’s face and cloak-like hair draping over the shoulders. The heads all face inward and are made of a white material.

In a room with a gray concrete floor and charcoal-gray walls, trios of metal panels stand against each of the three walls in our view. Steel-gray sculptures of Doberman dogs flank the space to either side of a metal cage, which nearly fills the height of the room. At least eight white amphora or vases are set in the base, and a screen above them has green or red text against a black background.

Metal cages encase four squat, upward-flaring concrete columns in a low-ceilinged space. The metal structures surround a fifth, which has a tray-like square base set with ceramic vases around a central metal beam.

About Azza El Siddique

Azza is a Black artist with long, curly black hair parted down the middle. She wears an oversized black shirt with elbow-length sleeves and stands in front a yellow wall.

Azza El Siddique (b. Khartoum, Sudan) is known for her room-sized sculptural environments made of welded steel that explore entropy, impermanence, and mortality. Her installations often take the form of immersive structures that shift between containment and collapse, tracing the physical and emotional residue of time and transformation. She received an MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2019 and a BFA from Ontario College of Art and Design University in 2014. She has participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine; Amant Foundation, New York; John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Residency, Wisconsin; and Harbourfront Centre, Ontario. Her work has been featured in The New Yorker, Artforum, Artpapers, Canadian Art, and Border Crossings. Recent exhibitions include Echoes to Omega, Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh; In the place of annihilation, MIT List Center, Cambridge; and that which trembles wavers, Bradley Ertaskiran, Montreal.
