Felicita Felli Maynard

Junto, te aplico is a sculptural installation, here set in a square alcove. A swath of tawny brown leather ripples and flares like a flame against the back and one side wall. A thick tree branch, a long dried palm frond, and other organic material is nestled in the folds. The piece is pinned to the back wall by the back end of a long iron stake. The point of the stake rests on a concrete block on the floor in the center of the alcove.

Jean, Loren, and the Oak in the 7th Ward is made up of two overlapping black and white photographs. In one, a young person sits leaning against a tree. Dappled light speckles the person and the brimmed hat they hold. Overlaid to the right, a person shown in a larger scale wears the hat and is partially cut off by the tree.

In this black and white photograph titled Birch and Leather, curling strips of both materials are loosely arranged and overlap against a stark white background. Three tendrils or branches extend down from a central, roughly oval-shaped form. The texture of the ringlets of bark vary from light to dark and smooth to rough.

This black and white photograph titled Young Jean in the Studio shows a person sitting with their body angled to our left. They rest one hand between their thighs and the other by their face, which turns to us. The person wears a flat cap, a dark vest over a short-sleeved white shirt, and dark pants with a pinstripe grid. Ripples appear to line the edges of the photo.

About Felicita Felli Maynard

Felicita Felli Maynard looks steadily out at us in this shadowy black and white photograph. Felli has dark-toned skin and long, thin dreadlocks. Parts of dark tattoos are visible on the chest and shoulders.

Felicita Felli Maynard (b. 1989) is an interdisciplinary research-based artist and archivist from Brooklyn, NY. Maynard is of Afro descent and a first-generation American. They work across many forms of photography, sculpture, sound, and installation. Maynard received their MFA from Tulane University in Photography (2023) and their BFA in Photography from CUNY Brooklyn College (2017). While at Tulane, they were a Mellon Fellow in Community-Engaged Scholarship (2021-2023). Their work explores the techniques and outcomes of survival and prosperity of descendants from the past, present, and future of the African diaspora. They investigate memory by way of the complexities left in landscapes governed by colonialism and capitalistic structures and the joys that come from a practice of manifesting through world-making.
